Glenwood
Springs will soon have its first-ever off-leash dog playfield!
A dedicated
group of volunteers raised $5000 for fencing and grass seed
to convert the city’s football-field size tract into
a safe play area for dogs. The seed has been planted, the fencing
purchased, and soon the park will be ready for summer Frisbee
and fetch fun.
The field is located between the river and the bike path,
behind the high school. People can access the park by parking
at Safeway on Grand Ave, crossing the railroad tracks and walking
north along the bike path.
The users’ group understands the importance of training
and socialization for dogs who will use the facility, and encourages
owners to take classes and make sure their dogs are safe around
other dogs before turning them loose! Contact High Tails for
socialization and obedience classes if you’re not sure
how your dog would react in a pack setting.
Dog parks are a phenomenon of the last decade, with dog owners
demanding a share of public space in which to responsibly enjoy
freedom to play. They have proven to be successful, with enthusiastic
owners acting as role models for newcomers. The city of Glenwood
Springs has a strict leash law everywhere else, and the dog
playfield is eagerly awaited by dog owners who live here, or
visit frequently.
We’ll give updates in this space
as the park is developed.
